Objectives: We evaluated postmenopausal women who received care at our hospital and determined the relationship between vitamin D levels and bone mineral density.
Materials and Methods : We evaluated 99 postmenopausal women, 43-82 years of age, between August 2008 and August 2009. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 [25-(OH) vitamin D3] levels were determined using a fully automated chemiluminescent immunoassay. Bone mineral density was measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry. Diagnosis of osteoporosis was defined according to the World Health Organization criteria.
Results: Our patients had a mean age of 59.1¡¾10.4 years, with an 11.4 year duration of menopause. The mean body mass index was 23.59¡¾3.23 kg/m2. The frequency of osteoporosis was 24.5%. The median 25 (OH) vitamin D3 level was 14.3 ng/mL (range, 4.0¡37.2 ng/mL). Hypovitaminosis D3 (<20 ng/mL) existed in 76.8% of the patients. Serum 25 (OH) vitamin D3 concentrations were significantly correlated with age (P-value=0.001), duration of menopause (P-value=0.005), and osteoporosis (P-value=0.044).
Conclusion: The 25 (OH) vitamin D3 levels in postmenopausal women of the Bucheon area are low. Studies to elucidate and assess the dietary intake of vitamin D3 in menopausal women of this region will be beneficial.
